We are an English family who after moving to North Wales decided that learning Cymraeg was the right and natural thing to do. The Welsh language is an absolutely beautiful language and honestly even without learning it, I could listen to it all day! We started our learning Journey in January 2024 and I think we're doing pretty well. It's been surprisingly hard to find resources and people who speak it, but when you find the other Welsh speakers, oh they love it! You will always have someone to talk to if you can talk in Welsh!

Favourite Resources

Living in Wales, I thought it would be pretty easy to find Welsh Language resources, especially as there is a Welsh Medium school in my town...However, this is NOT the case and I have actually found it really difficult to source Welsh Language resources! So I've put together a list of our Favourites with information and links, just click the image to learn more.

Byd y Cymraeg

Not a dictionary, but a book on the Welsh Language. This book has translations for some words, but it also looks at idioms, proverbs, mutations, sentence structure and so much more. All beautifully illustrated and accessible for children and adults alike. This is one of my favourite reference books!

Cyw

Cartoon, Magazine & Apps aimed at 0-6 year olds. However, the young language, bright colours and short but engaging plots make it a wonderful resource for slightly older children who are learning Welsh too.

Duo Lingo

Language learning app/website. No language resource list would be complete without DuoLingo. At this point I don't think I even need to introduce it. It's a game based language learning platform and it has Welsh.

Find and Speak Welsh Words

Dictionary, pronunciation guide and activity book. This book is split up into different locations with a small selection of things you will find in those areas and a picture depicting it for you to find them in. It's really very simple, but what makes it stand out is that it has a phonetic pronunciation guide for the welsh words, so you can see how it's supposed to sound, which is really useful as some letters may look the same but they are not pronounced the same as in English. So this is a really great first steps into learning your pronunciation.

Oxford Children's Welsh-English visual Dictionary

This Gorgeous visual dictionary is so much more child friendly than my adult welsh-english dictionary. But trying to source one is a nightmare! It's in our library and we picked our copy up second hand for £6, but Amazon has it at £100+ so you'll have to look for it, but it's worth finding.

An activity book aimed at younger children.

Pos I Ti

Word Puzzles for younger children. Cross words, word searches, pairing activities etc for colours, animals, months of the year, furniture etc.

Reading Books

Magi Ann

A graded reading scheme focusing on repetition of key words.

Tric a Chlic

Tric a Chlic is a graded Welsh Reading program similar to the phonics system in England. Cam 1 focuses on the different sounds each letter makes and the different colours build on which letters are used. Cam 2 looks at four letter words

The fabulous lost and found and the little welsh mouse

An English storybook to introduce Welsh Words.
The fabulous Lost and found is one of my all time favourite story books. It's about two frogs who run the lost and found somewhere in a city. Along comes a mouse who ONLY speaks whatever language, in this case....Welsh. Little mouse is looking for something but the frogs don't understand so they guess. Is it an Umbrella? A wig? A computer? on and on, each time mouse repeats the word in his language then says no until he finds what he's come for. It's absolutely delightful and introduces 50 words in a very accessible and funny way. Especially because little mouse is looking for his Het! Which is a hat. Yes.

Lingo Dingo

An English storybook to introduce Welsh Words. Lingo Dingo meets a chef who only speaks Welsh. They try to communicate with hilarious results. It's a bit of a next step from the lost and found as the Chef talks in more complicated sentences, but it's again a really good way to bring Welsh into story time in a more accessible way.

There is also an astronaut book in this series.
